Just because it’s normal doesn’t mean it’s healthy

We’re living and working in a time when being busy, emotionally available, and constantly switched on has become the norm. Expected, even. But normal doesn’t always mean healthy.

Across workplaces, families and communities, many people are carrying an invisible weight known as emotional load. Think of it as the ongoing effort of managing emotions (our own and others’), anticipating needs, supporting people through change, and staying empathetic no matter what else is going on behind the scenes.

Over time, this load can quietly tip into empathy fatigue. We don’t always notice it happening. We just feel flatter, more irritable, more exhausted, or strangely disconnected from things we once cared deeply about.

And we tell ourselves to push through.

The work no one sees

Emotional load can feel like constantly holding space for your colleagues, clients, family and friends.

When emotional labour goes unrecognised or unmanaged, it drains energy in ways rest alone doesn’t fix. We might still be functioning, meeting deadlines and showing up, but internally, our reserves are running low.

The first step to protecting ourselves is naming what we’re feeling.

When we can describe an emotion such as overwhelmed, resentful, exhausted, or numb, it reduces its power. Language helps move feelings from a vague internal pressure to something we can work with, respond to, and set boundaries around.

The empathy pause: A small tool with big impact

In my book Building Resilient Pathways, I share a powerful story about a deeply empathetic job coach called Chris. For Chris, the cost of giving endlessly became clear when she found herself exhausted and experiencing empathy fatigue by deeply feeling her clients’ struggles. It wasn’t dramatic. It was subtle. And that’s the point. Empathy fatigue rarely arrives loudly.

One of the tools I taught Chris to use is called the Empathy Pause.

The Empathy Pause creates a brief internal checkpoint before automatically absorbing someone else’s emotions. In practice, it looks like taking some deep breaths at the end of a session and sharing this short emotional mantra:

I was here, I cared, and now I let go.

This pause allows empathy to remain intentional rather than automatic and sets a clear boundary around your emotional energy.

Boundaries aren’t barriers

One of the myths around empathy is that it requires endless availability. In reality, healthy empathy depends on boundaries. Without them, compassion turns into obligation, and support becomes self-sacrifice.

Whether it’s limiting how much emotional processing you take on in a day, stepping back from fixing things that aren’t yours to fix, or simply naming when your own capacity is stretched, boundaries are a form of self-respect.

Building resilience starts with self-awareness

Emotional intelligence is all about recognising and managing your emotions. When you acknowledge what you’re carrying, what you’re absorbing, and what you need to protect, you’ll be able to have a positive and lasting impact in your role.

Key points of self-awareness

  1. Emotional self-awareness – the ability to recognise and understand your emotions for better emotional management.
  2. Accurate self-assessment – evaluating your strengths and limits is crucial for personal and professional growth.
  3. Self-confidence – a solid sense of your value and abilities empowers you to tackle challenges assuredly.
