The B.F.E Model
BFE is a good way to give feedback when you want to address situations that have caused some emotions – positive or negative.
By focusing on observable behaviour, personal feelings, and the resulting effect, this tool empowers people to communicate with honesty and empathy—essential for creating awareness and encouraging positive behaviour change.
All the Info
The Behaviour > Feeling > Effect Model
suggests that our actions (behaviour) directly influence our feelings and, in turn, the impact of those feelings on situations.
BFE helps take the emotion out of feedback by keeping the conversation anchored in facts and impact, rather than judgement or blame.
The simplicity of the three-step process makes it easy to learn and apply, allowing users to confidently address challenging situations, build stronger relationships, and support a culture of accountability and growth.
BFE encourages people to speak up with courage and clarity, creating the conditions for constructive change and deeper understanding in everyday interactions.
How to use it

IMPORTANT:
Make sure you follow the format when using BFE and ensure that you don’t say ‘you’ make me feel… because we don’t want to make people wrong or feel shame for their actions. We want to bring awareness to the impact of the behaviour.
BFE Feedback Model – adapted from principles of assertive communication and behavioral feedback models such as SBI (Center for Creative Leadership) and Nonviolent Communication (Rosenberg, 2003).
