The birthday hangover & why July is exactly what we need

June had all the sparkle.

The month was filled with celebration, reflection, and pride as we marked 20 years of a resilient small business that’s dedicated to making a difference.

A milestone like that gives you a reason to pause and look back at everything that has been built, survived, and imagined into existence. I loved the deep reflection that came with it – the memories, the gratitude, the “Can you believe we did that?” moments, and that surreal feeling of realising that a small idea has now become two decades of impact.

There’s no doubt, I was running on all the dopamine and adrenaline that a party brings!

But then July arrived….

As the birthday love slowed and the celebrations wrapped up, my inbox filled up again quickly, and the regular rhythm of work returned with a familiar thud.

The birthday hangover is real!

Not because the celebrations were too much, but because the contrast is so sharp. One moment you are standing in the glow of achievement, and the next you are back inside the practical realities of deadlines, EOFY reporting, new budgets, client needs, shifting priorities and the great mid-year question that tends to hover over everything: Where to from here?

And I know it’s not just me either. The Bounce team had been so focused on our 20th anniversary event for the first half of the year that, once it was over, they felt it, too.

The July reality check

July is such a powerful month for a reality check.

While it doesn’t have the same fresh-start energy of January and doesn’t carry the finish-line urgency of December, July sits in the middle, where the excitement of beginning has worn off and the pressure of completion has not yet arrived.

The middle of the year is a point where you can look honestly at what has unfolded and changed, what has stretched you, and what still matters enough to carry into the second half.

This kind of reflection can be uncomfortable, especially if the first six months didn’t go exactly to plan, but it can also be incredibly stabilising when you stop treating it as a performance review and start treating it as a reset.

People often lose momentum when the pathway to achieving a goal becomes unclear. They may still care deeply about the goal, the team, the clients or the work, but when there are too many competing demands and not enough space to think, hope can quietly shrink.

What once felt energising can start to feel heavy, and what once felt possible can become tangled in doubt or decision fatigue. In that space, telling people to “stay positive” is not enough. What helps is creating enough clarity so the next step becomes visible again.

The real opportunity of a mid-year reality check is to ask different questions:

  • What’s still important here?
  • What no longer fits?
  • What have we learned that needs to change?
  • Where are we spending energy that is not giving anything meaningful back?
  • What is the smallest next action that would create movement, confidence or relief?

These questions help us shift from overwhelm into agency, which is one of the most powerful ingredients in hope activation

Activating hope and resetting your focus

When people see they have choices, even small ones, their nervous system settles, and thinking becomes clearer. The next step feels less like a mountain and more like a simple move. That is often where momentum begins again – one clear decision followed by one practical action.

Creating a hope pathway can look like:

  • Simplifying the priorities
  • Naming something that’s no longer realistic
  • Staying true to your word (having integrity)
  • Deliberately protecting your energy, or putting in a boundary
  • Building in moments where people can reconnect with the purpose behind the work

The energy we bring into conversations also matters. A thoughtful check-in, a practical offer of support, a reminder of someone’s strengths, or a conversation that helps untangle the next step can do more than lift someone’s mood. It can restore their sense of possibility.

Use the Hope Map to help reach a goal.

Celebrating 20 years has reminded me that Bounces’ resilience has come from thousands of conversations, choices, pivots, relationships and brave little recommitments along the way.

The same is true for the second half of the year. We’re not busting into July with perfect energy and a flawless plan. The plan is, however, to take a breath, pay attention to what’s working, acknowledge what we’ve achieved, and be flexible around what comes next.

So, perhaps the birthday hangover is not a problem after all. Perhaps it is an invitation. After the celebration and reflection, after that big milestone moment, comes the quieter, more important work of deciding what to do next. And after that pause, we can focus on the deliberate act of finding direction, creating options and taking the next meaningful step.

And as we move into the back half of 2026, that might be exactly what we need most.
