The ‘Mental Model’ and ‘Meaningful Engagement’ – Is it jargon, or does it hold value?

And what does it mean for the new Inclusive Employment Australia contract?

I attended the DEA Leaders Forum in Canberra last month, hoping to positively engage with other leaders and discuss the new Inclusive Employment Australia contract and what this means for the sector, despite the anxiousness of the tender results not having been announced.

It was a powerful gathering of passionate leaders, policymakers, and experts, all committed to enhancing employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

As I listened, I took notes and underlined a few key phrases that were repeated throughout the day.

The ‘Mental Model’ and ‘meaningful engagement’ were frequently used when talking about how providers manage their frontline teams and clients.

I found myself reflecting on the term ‘Mental Model’ and the context in which it applies to providers – does the mental model of your organisation help or hinder your progress and outcomes?

A mental model in employment services is like a thinking shortcut—it helps practitioners understand and respond to client behaviour, system barriers, or workplace dynamics in a way that leads to better decision-making and more effective support.

Do you have effective mental models in your workplace? By exploring this, you may find that you can enhance your organisational culture, retention of staff, service delivery and outcomes.

And what does meaningful engagement really look like? We hear the phrase used all the time, but can we articulate exactly what it means?

Here’s what we think at Bounce…

Meaningful engagement is when support feels like a partnership, not just paperwork. It’s genuine, goal-driven, and grounded in the belief that everyone has the potential to find a job and keep it.

It’s more than advice. It’s advocacy, action, and a belief that success is inevitable.

And every provider has the ability to engage meaningfully – with the right investment in the skills and knowledge of your people.

Bounce exists to empower providers with cutting-edge training solutions, hope activation methodologies, and evidence-based approaches to improve outcomes for everyone. After almost 20 years in the sector, we know exactly what works – because you’ve helped us shape and tailor it to suit your needs!

At Bounce, we use knowledge frameworks to turn complex ideas into simple, usable tools that make a real difference. By applying mental models to employment services, we help practitioners see beyond the surface—navigating client challenges with clarity and uncovering new ways to create meaningful engagement and lasting outcomes.

As the journey toward true inclusion continues, Bounce Global is ready to support and amplify the important work you do.

With the current contract extended until October this year, you have an opportunity to provide stability to your workforce by investing in their skills and promoting a positive workplace culture.

Client Love

Maria went on a round-the-globe adventure in March, traveling to the UK and USA to deliver training to some incredible organisations.

First stop, the UK to deliver an appreciate enquiry session with Anxiety UK. We love this feedback from their CEO, Dr Nicky Lidbetter…

“𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦, 𝘦𝘯𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸, 𝘬𝘦𝘺 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦, 𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮 𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. Then she delivered the second workshop from the Adaptive Leadership Program with the team from Angus Knight Group in the UK and we received this feedback from CEO Ayden Sims…

“The session built on a previous programme with Bounce that saw the us investing in the development of future leaders within the business, which also received great feedback. I’d like to thank Maria for her facilitation, and my incredible team for their input and involvement. Truly a group that share my passion for the work we do and the people we support.”

In the UK with the leadership team from AGK.

And then she flew to the USA to deliver training to our Coaching Skills for Leaders program to Burns & Fortes Consulting in New Bedford, MA.

Executive Administrative Assistant Chantelle Keating had this to say about the experience…

“Maria, you are an amazing speaker! It’s incredible how much you can learn when you truly listen, and I gained so much insight in such a short time during yesterday’s training. I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to visit our beautiful new training center and office. Hearing you speak was truly impactful—it gave me new perspectives on areas I can improve and better understand. Your words have made a lasting impression, and I’m truly grateful. Thank you again!”

In the USA, with the team from Burns & Forte Consulting.

All new public programs – back by demand!

Our first Coaching Skills for Emerging Leaders was a sold-out success!

So, we’re opening up another round!

And we have a ridiculously special offer for anyone that joins the program…for an additional $50, we’ll provide each participant with an Introductory Strengths Profile.

The profile includes: A 30-minute debrief session with Chris and a report that explores your top seven realised and unrealised strengths, top four learned behaviours and top three weaknesses.

And we’re on a mission to keep up with the demand for Job Coach Certification as well!

A new date has been released for a public group to commence in April. Book early to secure your seats.

The fastest way out of uncertainty is to take action.

That’s what I always tell myself and my team when we find ourselves struggling to find a way forward.

Uncertainty is the space between what you know and what comes next.

It’s the fog that blurs the future, the hesitation before a leap, and the thrill (or fear 😉) of the unknown. It can be unsettling, but it’s also where growth, possibility, and discovery live.

In the employment services sector, we often find ourselves in times of uncertainty, particularly when the time frame between contracts is short. And for our friends and the providers that work in the Disability Employment Services space, uncertainty has been swirling.

With the recent announcement of the federal election and the extension to contracts until October, that provides enough information to move forward over the next 6 months.

One of the best ways to support your team and offer a sense of stability is by continuing to invest in them. A positive workplace culture is key to navigating challenges and change.  When wellbeing is high, people are more agile and resilient, and it’s easier to move through change when you feel supported.

So, what is a small step you can take to start to move out of uncertainty today?
