The must-have trait for all leaders

Vision, resilience, drive, innovation – you name the leadership trait, someone’s championing it.

However, one trait has emerged as the most in-demand because it’s essential to building positive workplace cultures.

Over 20 years of working with business and government leaders has taught me a thing or two – that successful leadership skills aren’t something you’re born with. But you can develop them with time, experience, and a desire to improve each day.

So, what makes a truly great leader stand out?

Self-awareness.

It’s the not-so-secret ingredient that separates good leaders from the outstanding ones. Without it, leaders can experience a divide between the people in their teams. This divide can grow as connections and trust are lacking, making people feel unheard and undervalued.

Self-Awareness: The mirror of mastery

Imagine this: a leader who is completely oblivious to their strengths and weaknesses, doesn’t actively listen, doesn’t seek feedback, and doesn’t admit when they have made a mistake.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? That’s because it is.

Self-awareness is the mirror through which leaders can see their true selves. It’s not just about recognising how good you are (though a little confidence boost never hurts) – it’s also about your ability to admit where you fall short and the wisdom to do something about it.

Here are my five top tips for building self-awareness:

1. The Ego Check

Self-awareness is the sharp reality check that keeps a lid on your ego. It’s about understanding that you don’t have all the answers, and that’s okay. Leaders who are self-aware know when to step back, listen, and learn. They aren’t afraid to ask for help or delegate tasks to those who might do it better.

This isn’t weakness; it’s strategic mastery.

2. Emotional intelligence: The heartbeat of leadership

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence. Leaders who master this trait have an uncanny ability to navigate the complex web of human emotions. They understand their own emotional triggers and can control their reactions. This emotional agility allows them to connect with their team on a deeper level, fostering trust and loyalty.

Let’s face it, no one wants to follow a robotic dictator. We crave leaders who are human, who understand us, and who can inspire us.

3. Adaptability as a survival skill

Adaptability is a leader’s best friend – especially in workplaces where change feels almost constant. Self-aware leaders are like chameleons, able to adapt to new challenges and environments with ease. They aren’t stuck in their ways or resistant to change. Instead, they embrace it, knowing that growth often comes from discomfort.

By being aware of their own limitations, they can pivot and adjust their strategies, leading their teams through the storm rather than into it.

4. The feedback loop

Self-aware leaders don’t just tolerate feedback – they crave it. They understand that constructive criticism is a tool for growth, not a personal attack. By actively seeking and reflecting on feedback, they can continuously improve themselves and their leadership style. This creates a culture of openness and growth within their teams, where everyone feels empowered to speak up and contribute.

5. Be real

There’s a lot of talk about “authentic leadership” these days, but what does it mean? Authenticity isn’t a buzzword for self-aware leaders – it’s a way of life. They are genuine and transparent, and not afraid to show vulnerability. Authenticity is magnetic. It draws people in and creates a loyal following. When leaders are true to themselves, they inspire others to do the same, creating a powerful ripple effect throughout the organisation.

The Self-Awareness Checklist

How self-aware are you? Can you identify your emotions quickly and regulate them? Are you able to give and receive feedback effectively?

This is a fast and easy checklist to help you build your self-awareness!

Final thoughts...

Self-awareness is the edge that sets exceptional leaders apart from the rest. By embracing self-awareness, leaders can unlock their full potential, cultivate strong relationships, and steer their teams towards success.

So, if you’re looking to up your leadership game, start with the person staring back at you in the mirror. Get to know them, understand them, and most importantly, be honest with them.

The journey to exceptional leadership begins with self-awareness, and trust me, it’s an incredible ride!
