Three ways to finish the year strong (without burning out)

The year is winding down, and it’s tempting to cruise to the finish line. All you need to do is just get through the final weeks before collapsing into a well-earned break.

I know the feeling. It’s been a hectic year with change and transition featuring strongly across the industry. Wanting to ‘just get to Christmas’ seems to be the goal for most of us, so we can all rest.

But what if I told you there is a way you could reframe this way of thinking, so this could be the moment you finish strong instead?

When I say, ‘finishing strong’, I don’t mean doing more. Finishing strong means doing what matters most and wrapping up the year with purpose, presence, and pride, so you can step into the new year with energy, not exhaustion.

Here are three game-changing moves to finish strong…

1. Refocus: Choose what deserves your energy

At this time of year, everything can feel urgent: reports to finish, targets to meet, inboxes to clear. But not everything deserves your energy. The key is focus, not frenzy.

Pause and ask yourself: What’s really worth my attention right now? Choose the three priorities that will make the biggest impact for you and your team. When you say yes to the right things, you automatically say no to the noise.

Why this matters: Research shows that higher levels of subjective well-being (i.e., people feeling more positive, less stressed) are linked to greater productivity in the workplace.  When we align our focus, we boost our well-being and that translates into impact.

Tip: Use an End-of-Year Energy Audit:

  • What’s lighting you up?
  • What’s draining you?
  • Where can you shift or stop effort to preserve fire for what counts?

Then commit to your top three focus areas and let the rest fall away.

2. Recharge: Rest is a strategy

When we talk about finishing strong, many assume it means ramping up the effort, grinding harder and longer. But here’s the truth: strength without rest is just strain.

Take a deliberate pause. Even daily micro-breaks (10 minutes or less) have been shown to significantly boost worker energy and reduce fatigue, improving well-being. When you’re rested, you lead better, make better decisions, and connect better.

Leaders who build in recovery sustain results. Research affirms this: leaders’ own well-being is a strong predictor of their team’s health and performance.

Tip: Build recovery into your calendar like a meeting – no exceptions.

  • Block out 10 minutes daily: walk, journal, box-breathing.
  • Create a “calm space” block at least once a week for reflection.
  • Commit to one “unplug” evening this November – technology off, brain off, recharge ON.

3. Recognise: Celebrate progress over perfection

Before you sprint into the new year, take a moment to look back. What went well? What stretched you? What are you proud of?

Celebrating your achievements helps you fuel motivation, resilience and engagement. According to workplace wellbeing research, when leaders demonstrate genuine care and recognition, staff experience higher job satisfaction and lower stress. Supportive leadership = better wellbeing.

Tip:

  • Write down three things you’re grateful for this year.
  • Identify one person who helped you show up and reach out with a sincere thank-you.
  • Share a team win (no matter how small) – bonus points if you highlight the ‘how’, not just the ‘what’.

When you stop chasing perfect, and instead celebrate present, you close with confidence and kick off what’s next with momentum.

Final thoughts...

Finishing strong isn’t about squeezing more into your calendar. It’s about finishing with clarity, calm, and confidence.

When you step into December proud of how you showed up, not just what you achieved,  you’re already starting the new year from a place of power, not panic.

You’re saying: “I am a strong finisher and I will carry this strength into what’s next.”
