What are you paying attention to?

How often do you notice your clients slipping into negative thinking patterns?

Our brains are hardwired towards a negativity bias, and for people experiencing unemployment, it can be a strong driver of their actions and behaviours.

By helping clients shift their focus from all the negative things in their lives to more positive things and expanding their comfort zones, job coaches can foster a more optimistic outlook and open up new opportunities for growth and success.

Paying attention to shape experiences

Attention is a powerful tool that can significantly influence our perception of the world around us. What we focus on can either enhance our wellbeing or contribute to our stress and anxiety.

In the context of coaching, helping clients pay attention to positive aspects of their lives can lead to a more balanced and resilient mindset.

One effective technique is to encourage clients to practice active listening, which involves paying attention in the present moment without judgment – listening to understand and not to respond.

When your clients become more aware of their thoughts and feelings, it also helps them identify negative patterns and shift their focus to more positive and constructive thoughts. This practice can help clients develop greater control over their emotions and reactions, leading to improved mental wellbeing.

The lens we see the world through

Perception is the lens through which we interpret our experiences. It is shaped by our beliefs, values, and past experiences. As coaches, it is essential to help clients recognise how their perceptions influence their thoughts and behaviours.

By challenging negative perceptions and encouraging a more positive outlook, coaches can help clients build resilience and adaptability.

One way to achieve this is through cognitive reframing. Reframing involves identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and replacing them with more positive and realistic ones.

For example, if a client perceives not getting an interview as a failure, you can help them reframe it as a learning opportunity. This shift in perception can reduce feelings of helplessness and increase motivation to overcome challenges.

Get out of the comfort zone

Expanding your comfort zone is another key aspect of fostering resilience. When your clients step out of their comfort zones, they expose themselves to new experiences and challenges, which can lead to personal growth and increased confidence.

You can support clients in this process by setting achievable goals and providing encouragement and feedback.

One effective strategy is to use gradual exposure. Gradual exposure involves breaking down a challenging task into smaller, manageable steps with support to complete them. By gradually increasing the level of difficulty, clients can build their confidence and skills over time. This approach can help clients overcome fear and anxiety, making it easier for them to tackle more significant challenges in the future.

Building a positive outlook

A positive outlook is essential for resilience. When clients focus on the positive aspects of their lives, they are more likely to feel motivated and empowered to achieve their goals. You can help your clients cultivate a positive outlook by encouraging gratitude and positive self-talk.

Gratitude involves recognising and appreciating the good things in life. The “Three Good Things” activity perfectly prepares your clients for a successful appointment.

So, how do you do it?

When you start your appointment with a client, encourage them to reflect on three good things in their life. They can be absolutely anything – big or small, simple or profound. And if your clients find this a bit challenging, you could lead the way by giving examples of three good things that make you happy. This is a great way to build trust and connection with your clients.

We’ve created a simple Three Good Things worksheet to help your clients reflect and find positives every day.

Final thoughts...

Attention and perception are powerful tools that can shape our experiences and influence our wellbeing. Job coaches can foster a more resilient and optimistic mindset by helping clients shift their focus from negative to positive and expanding their comfort zones.

Ultimately, the journey towards resilience is a continuous process of growth and self-discovery. With the right guidance and support, clients can develop the skills and mindset needed to navigate life’s challenges and seize new opportunities. As coaches, we are privileged to be part of this transformative journey, helping our clients build resilient pathways to success.
